"I am searching for descendants of the old Pastors of the Linwood
Congregational Church. It is our intention to erect a new building on the
original site (in Linwood, NE) and I would just like to communicate with the family
members of the original Pastors so that I can compile as history of the original church.
The names of the Pastors I have are:
Rev. J.A. Reed and Rev. Reuben Gaylord prepared the way
for Rev. Dresser & family. Pastor Amos Dresser
served from 1873-1877, Pastor Byron Beall from 1880-1883, Pastor M.J.P.
Thing from 1884-1887, Pastor H.C. Hulbersluben from 1892-1897,
Pastor F.G. Appleton, 1897- 1898 (?) , Pastor Roger M. Sargent
from 1900 - at least 1901. I certainly would appreciate any assistance at all in
finding this information so that these Pastors can be memorialized in some way when the
new building is erected. I would also appreciate any photos or newspaper articles so
that the history of the church can be preserved."
Thank you,

In the year 1868, Rev. Worley walked from Lincoln, Ne., [about 35 miles as the crow flies]
to hold services along the Big Blue River in a "booth" made with branches for
shade.
The first Methodist Episcopal class was at the Salem Schoolhouse south of Ulysses, in
Seward County, in 1872, with Rev. J. R. Reed, as Pastor.
In 1880 a lot was purchased in Ulysses, and a parsonage built. In 1881, the corner
stone of a Church was laid and one year later a spire with a bell was added. The
basement was added in 1914. This Church burned to the ground in 1932.
A new early English style of architecture Church as built and dedicated October 9, 1932.
The cost of the new building, including some new furnishings was $8,250.00. The
Church celebrated the 110th anniversary in 1982. There was a special morning
worship, a dinner, and an afternoon program. Two hundred thirty people including
many past ministers were present. The time box was opened and articles were
displayed.
At the present time, April 2001, the Church is served by Rev. Mike Moyer of Beaver
Crossing, Ne. The United Methodist Women host a chicken/biscuit dinner and a
Memorial Day luncheon each year, plus make cheer plates for the elderly and shut-ins at
Christmas. Ref: Grace M. Hoeft
