The following partial obituary was reprinted from the Butler County Press, David City, January 1910. Mary Barbara (Dehner) Meysenburg 1848-1910 In the year 1855 she moved west with her parents and family and located in Jones County, Eastern Iowa. On January 19, 1869 she was united in holy wedlock to P. N. Meysenburg of the same locality who had emigrated, when quite young, from the Province of Luxemburg, Europe. Shortly after their marriage, like many others, they started in an emigrant wagon to seek a home and finally located near Topeka, Kansas. The location and climate there being undesirable and unhealthy , they started for Nebraska and settled in Butler County on the north-west quarter of section 30, Bone Creek Township on July 3, 1869. Like all early settlers who blazed the way for civilization and the development of the country, their problems and hardships were many putting their trust in God and having strong faith in the future of this country, succeeded in making themselves a good home. God Almighty not only blessed them with abundant riches, but with a large fruitful family of eleven children, six of whom are alive and five little angels who preceeded her to her eternal reward. Mr. P. N. Meysenburg and his estimable wife were the pioneer settlers of this early and flourishing settlement and are well and truly recognized as the father and mother of the beautiful Luxemburg settlement. These sturdy German farmers are known not only to be good citizens, but honest, thrifty and successful farmers, who have done much to build up this portion of Butler county. Mrs. P. N. Meysenburg being ill for some time, finally consented to have a severe operation performed at the Sister's Hospital in Columbus hoping to gain good health, but she never rallied sufficiently to come home to die. During her serious illness the Lord was near her and with Him she suffered. She thought of all that Christ had borne for her sake. She felt that He was near her and that her sufferings would one day be changed to eternal joys. And at the hour of her death where did she find her greatest solace? In the devout reception of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Oh, then indeed her Savior was very near her, forgiving, assisting, encouraging and she came nearer to Him and as we may safely hope was entirely united to Him. Let us calmly hope that God has placed her in a garden far more beautiful than this valley of tears. But if she has not already entered into its beauties, let us offer up for her our fervent prayers, that reaching the throne of God, they may effect her release, shorten her time of probation and place her near very near her God, whose presence she ever remembered during life. Mrs. P. N. Meysenburg was ever from her early days a fervent, conscientious and practical Catholic. Her's was a life full of good works ever charitable and hospitable in her quiet and unassuming manner. She was ever active, generous and helpful in her church life and her wise counsel and good example shed a genial ray or enlightment to others. At the time of her death she was President of the Altar Society and guided same with wisdom and success. The parish of David City suffered a severe loss in her sad demise and can ill afford to lose her at this time. She was always a faithful worker and a power for good. She leaves behind her to mourn her loss, a faithful and sorrowing husband and a devoted family. Her funeral obseques were held in the Catholic tradition. |
