David City, Nebraska – local newspaper – dated January 1944 OBITUARY. Elmer Wallace Haight, son of Lewis B. and Elizabeth I. Haight, was born October 22, 1862, at Honey Creek, Wisconsin, and passed away January 10, 1944 at the David City hospital at the age of 81 years, 2 months, and 19 days. His parents came with their family to Butler County, Nebraska, in the spring of 1871 and homesteaded the present Haight farm. Here Mr. Haight grew to manhood, married, reared his family and lived until 1926 when he moved to David City. He was united in marriage to Miss Flora Burr of David City, March 10, 1898. To this union were born three sons, Ernest B. of David City, Lewis C. of York, and Elton V. who preceded his father in death. In addition to his widow and two sons, he is survived by eight grandchildren, three sisters and a host of other relatives and friends. Four sisters preceded him in death. The three remaining sisters are (Emma) Mrs. George W. Howard of Oakley, Kansas; (Ella) Mrs. Clinton Gross of David City; and (Rachael) Mrs. George Tabor of Kearney. He united with the First Baptist Church of David City, in September 1893, and was a faithful member up to the time of his passing. He was a deacon of the church for nearly 50 years, and church treasurer for more than 35 years. His faithfulness in attendance was exemplary. He loved the house of God and all its services, prayer meetings, Sunday School, morning and evening worship, he was present at them all. To his church and his Master he rendered a long and fruitful service. It can truly be said of him, as of one of old, “He being dead yet speaketh.” Funeral services were held from the Baptist church at 2:30 p.m. January 13, 1944, conducted by Rev. W. A. Wilkin, his pastor. Burial was in the David City cemetery. The music was Mrs. Brogan, Mrs. Wilkin, John Eberly and John Bykerk. The selections were “Going Dow the Valley,” “Blessed Assurance,” and “The City Four Square.” The Casket bearers were Charles Graybill, John Schweser, J. A. Lundsford, Ted Proctor, Lester Gibson, and Clarence Canady. |

Jeanne Hanus, 15, dies Thursday After A Lingering Illness Jeanne Hanus, 15, of Bellwood died Thursday, Aug. 18, at the David City Hospital following an illness of about a year. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at Presententation church with Solemn Requiem Mass conducted by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. E. Cooper, Rev. Raymond Hain, master of ceremonies and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Alphonse J. Lisko and Rev. Max DeWitt assisted in the sanctuary. Sister Mary Diretta was at the organ. The flower girls were Judy Hain, Nancy Reisdorff, Carol Burglund, Jane Birkel, Mignon Dolly Morbach, Carol Hiller, Maru Ann Phillips, Patsy Reisdorff, Julie Meysenburg, Joyce Semin and Judy Demuth. Honarary pallbearers were cousins of Jeanne, Julee Alberts, Marie Ann Morbach, Jean Birkel, Susan Birkel, Jean Dworak, Mary Lee Beckuis, Betty Meysenburg and Mary Jo Meysenburg. The active pallbearers were four cousins, Alfred Hanus and Jerry Birkel, Billy Puetz and Bob Beckius and two classmates Bob Tuma and James Demuth. Burial was in the church cemetery. Jeanne Hanus, the daughter of John and Mary Rose Hanus, was born Feb. 27, 1940 at Bellwood. She attended school at Marietta grade and high school. She was a member of the Junior CYO, the band, pep club and volleyball team. She was secretary -treasurer of the sophomore class last year and she ranked high in her class scholastically. Surviving are her father, John Hanus, her stepmother, Genevieve, two brothers, Gerald and John and three sisters, Kay, Connie Jo and Karen Sue, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hanus and Mr. and Mrs. Nick Puetz and her step grandmother, Mrs. John Birkel. Coming from a distance to attend the funeral were relatives and friends from Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Albion, Cedar Rapids, Shelby, Osceola, Dwight, Schuyler and Brainard. |

Hanus of David City were conducted Thursday morning, June 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mr. Hanus died Monday, June 13 at the Butler County Hospital following a lingering illness. Msgr. A. J. Lisko and Father Paul Rutten concelebrated the Mass of the Resurrection. Music was furnished by Dan and Zita Hook and Joann Mazourek accompanied by Pat Hanus, organist. Members of the Knights of Columbus attended in a body. Pallbearers were Bob Beckius, Jim Morbach, Jim Hilger, Nick Birkel, Richard Steager and Don Hilger. Burial was in St. Mary's and St Peter's Cemetery in Bellwood. John J. Hanus, the son of Leo and Mary Mach Hanus, was born July7 4, 1913 in Omaha. On Dec. 27, 1938, he was united in marriage to Mary Rose Puetz at Presentation Church. Three children were born to this union. She died March 14, 1946. On Nov. 18, 1947, he was married to Genevieve Birkel at St. Mary's Catholic Church in David City. Three children were born to this union. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; two sons, Gerald Hanus of Longmont, Colo., and John L. Hanus of Lincoln; three daughters, Mrs. Mel (Mary Kay) Cihal of Dwight, Mrs. Don (Connie) Johnson of Lincoln and Mrs. Paul (Karen) Steffensmeier of Grand Island; two brothers, Leo Hanus of Columbus and Joe Hanus of David City; five sisters, Mrs. Louis (Mary) Steager, Mrs. John (Ann) Morbach, Mrs. Sylvester (Emily) Hilger and Mrs. Clarence (Ludy) Birkel, all of David City and Sister Marietta Hanus, OSF of Guatemala; and seven grandchildren. His wife, Mary Rose and daughter Jeanne, preceded him in death. |

Mary Rose (Puetz) Hanus 1917-1946 Mrs. John Hanus Died March 14 Mrs. John Hanus, 28, died at the David City hospital at 2:30 pm Thursday, March 14, leaving an infant son, Gerald Joseph, and two other children, Jeanne Elizabeth and Mary Katherine, and her husband, also her parents Mr. and Mrs. Nick Puetz of Bellwood, one brother, Lawrence Puetz of David City and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Beckius and Mrs. Clara Meysenburg of David City and Miss Rita Puetz at home. Mary Rose Puetz was born on a farm near David City October 7, 1917 and was married to John J. Hanus at St. Mary's church, Luxemburg on December 27, 1938, they making their home on a farm east of Bellwood. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Alter Society and a member of the Catholic Daughters. Funeral services were held at 9:30am Saturday in St. Mary's church, Luxemburg. in charge of Rev. Daniel E. Cooper. Music was by the church choir, with Sister Sidora, organist. Richard Michael, Eugene Schmit, Gerald Janicek, Clarence Birkel, Robert Hanus and Jerry Hanus, cousins of the deceased were pallbearers. Hilger, David City were conducted Saturday morning, August 18. from St. Mary's Catholic church with Msgr. A. J. Lisko officiating. Mr. Hilger died August 15, at the Butler County Hospital. Mrs. Ray Vanis was organist. Members of the Knights Of Columbus attended in a body. Pallbearers were E. A. Supancheck, Leonard Hilger, Harold Phillips, Alfred Hilger, Joe Hilger and Eugene Kosch. Burial. was in St. Mary's Cemetery, David City. Albert Hilger was born July 25, 1882; at David City to Henry Hilger and Anna Victor. He attended the David City schools. On Jan.16, 1907, he was married to Catherine Phillips at Marietta Church. Six children were born to this union. A retired farmer. Mr. Hilger was the first male resident to move into St. Joseph's Villa following its re-opening about 14 years ago lie continued to reside there until his death. He was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by two daughters. Mrs. Joe Lenora Steiner, David City and Mrs. Alex (Agnes) Shumacher, Lincoln, 11 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1933, two sons, Arnold and Bernard, and two infant sons. |

Hilger aged 21 years, 1 month and 29 days was a shock to his relatives and many young friends, in this city when it became known that he had passed away at the St. Mary's hospital in Columbus at 9:30 Wednesday, October 6th. Arnold had been ill with pneumonia for about ten days prior to his untimely passing. Deceased is the son of Albert Hilger of this city, his mother having passed away four years previous to her son's death. He leaves besides his father, two sisters, Mrs. Joe Steiner of Bellwood and Agnes at home, also one brother, Bernard, residing at home. Two brothers also passed away before him. For many years he resided on a farm with his parents near this city and went to school here where he has a large circle of close friends. Funeral services were conducted from the St. Mary's church in this city of which he was a devout member at 9:30 Friday, October 8th with Father Tupy in charge. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery near this city. The St. Mary's Junior choir sang at the services. Pallbearers were Paul Hilger, Anthony Hilger and William Kosch of Shelby, Leonard Phillips Leonard Hilger and Anthony Hilger of Columbus. With the passing of this youth, his family are grief stricken, and his friends deeply cut with their loss from among them. Bernard Hilger Services Held Wednesday Funeral services for Bernard Victor Hilger. 64 of rural David City were conducted Wednesday morning Sept. 14 from St. Mary's Catholic church. Mr. Hig1er died Sunday evening. Sept. II, at the Butler County Hospital. Msgr. A. J. Lisko officiated at the services. Members of the Knights of Columbus attended in a body. Pallbearers were Jerome Danaher, Tony Hiller. Len Hilger. Alfred Hilger, Gene Phillips and Gene Kosch. Burial was at St Mary's Cemetery. Bernard, the son of Albert and Catherine Phillips Hilger, was born Oct. 1, 1912. at David City. On June 8, 1937, he was united in marriage to Rose Kresha at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Osceola. Three children were born to this union. They lived on a farm northwest of David City. where Mr. Hilger was engaged in farming. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Rose; two sons, Robert Hilger of David City and Daniel Hilger of Bellwood. One daughter. Mrs. Henry (Janice-Bonnie) Kobza of Bellwood; his father. Albert Hilger of St Joseph's Villa; two sisters, Lenora Steiner and Agnes Schumacher and 11 grandchildren. His mother and brother, Arnold preceded him in death. |
Reprinted from the People's Banner, David City, NE, 19 Jan 1933 Catherine Irene (Phillips) Hilger 1884-1933 Mrs. Albert Hilger Funeral Monday Catherine Phillips was born to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Phillips on January 24, 1884 in Jackson County, Iowa and passed away at her home Friday, January 13th at 9:15p. m. She had been very ill of pneumonia for the week previous. When but an infant, Mrs Hilger came with her parents to Butler County where she was raised to young womanhood. She was united in marriage to Albert Hilger at the Luxemburg church on the valley just 26 years ago on the day of her burial. To this union were born six children, two died in infancy, and the remaining children are: Mrs. Joe Steiner, living on the valley and Bernard, Arnold and Agnes at home. After her marriage deceased had made her home with her husband on a farm three and a half northwest of David City until her death. Besides her devoted husband and the children, Mrs. Hilger leaves the following sisters and brothers: John and Nick Phillips and Mrs. J. J. Meysenburg living on the valley and Mrs. Peter Supancheck of this city and Henry Phillips near: this city, Mrs. Emerson Horton of Sioux City, Iowa. Sister Solana of Milwaukee and William Phillips of Bellevue, Ia. Funeral services were conducted from St. Mary's church in this city and burial took place in the Catholic cemetery on Monday morning at 9:30. Pallbearers were nephews, Anthony Supancheck, Harold Meysenburg, Francis and Walter Hilger, Leo Kosch and William Phillips. The following people were here for the service: Mrs. and Mrs. Wm. Hilger Dies in Traffic Accident Saturday Funeral services for Michael Dean Hilger, 18, of Bellwood were held Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, from, Presentation church, Bellwood, with Father Gerald Vap officiating. Michael died Saturday morning, Feb. 21, in a car accident near Madison. Pallbearers were Robert Jaster, Marty Kobza, Jeff Kampovitz, Matt Romshek, Gerald Frahm, and Scott Wellman. Burial was in the Presentation Cemetery. Michael the son of Daniel A. and Mary Jane Hilger, was born Feb.24, 1968, at David City. He attended St. Mary's Grade School in David City and graduated from Aquinas High School in 1986. At Aquinas he lettered in wrestling one year and was a band member for three years. He raced go-carts for three years and was a member or the Marietta Livestock 4-H Club for seven years. A member of Presentation Parish (Marietta), he was interested in auto mechanics and fishing. He had recently graduated from the food service of the Air National Guard and planned to attend Southeast Community College, Milford, majoring in automotive technology. Survivors include his parents, Dan and Mary Jane Hilger, a brother, Marcus, and a sister, Michelle, all of Bellwood; grandparents, Ernest and Adeline Turek of Columbus and Rose Hilger of David City. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Bernard Hilger. |

Funeral services for Mrs. Carl (Josephine) Hille, 81, of Norfolk were held Saturday morning, Sept. 24, from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Norfolk with the Rev. James Coyle officiating. Robert Kreizinger was lector. Dan and Zita Hook sang the meditation song. Mr. Hille died Sept. 22 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Norfolk. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Josephine was born May 2, 1902, at David City to Louis R. and Caroline (Meysenburg) Kreizinger. She married Dr. Carl Hille in Omaha on June 14, 1930. They resided in Beaver Crossing until 1954. Dr. Hille was in medical practice there before joining the Norfolk Regional Center staff where he worked for a number of years before retiring. Mrs. Hille was a member of the Alter Society, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America and a member of Court San Salvador No. 576, David City. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Carl Hille; one son, Donald J. Hille of Firth; three brothers, Arthur Kreizinger of Bonaparte, IA, L. Robert Kreizinger of Columbus and Daniel D. Hook (adopted) of David City; four grandchildren, nieces and nephews. |

(Schmit) Michael, was born March 30. 1924. at David City. She at-tended David City High School On April 9,1947, she was united in marriage to Anthony V. Hiller at St. Mary's Catholic Church, David City. Nine children were born to this union. She made her home on a farm near Bellwood. A homemaker, she was a member of SL Peter's Catholic Church, a member of the Altar Society. the American Legion Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters of The Americas. She is survived by her husband. Anthony V. (Tony) Hiller of Bellwood; two sons. Michael Hiller of Kansas City. MO, and Peter (Chuck) Hiller of Lincoln, seven daughters. Connie Hiller of Kansas City. MO, Kate Shoemaker of Yankton.
