GRACE SHEPHERD WINGATE

Grace Shepherd WINGATE, daughter of William SHEPHERD and Elizabeth LORY SHEPHERD, was born in the little community of Cedar Creek near Elgin, Nebraska, on December 21, 1886 and passed away on Mothers Day, Sunday, May 14, 1939, at 6:00 p.m., aged fifty-two years, four months and twenty-three days. Although she had been seriously ill for several months her courage never faltered and with her determination to carry on she rallied and for several days was up and about, taking unusual interest in her family and planning for a picnic dinner in the out of doors she loved so well, so that her death which followed a stroke early Sunday came as a distinct shock to her family and friends. After completing the grade school curricula in Cedar Creek, she entered Elgin High School, graduating from that institution in 1908. After this she taught school for several years, giving unselfishly of her time and strength for the pupils whom she loved. On New Years Day 1911, she was married to Carl J. WINGATE and moved to their farm near Tilden. To this happy union three sons, William J. WINGATE, Eugene L. WINGATE and Carl J. WINGATE and daughter Dorothy WINGATE, now Mrs. George WAGNER, were born. These are now left to mourn the passing of their beloved mother. Mr. WINGATE died in 1923. In 1933 she moved with her family to Platteville, Wisconsin, where a host of friends attest the value of her friendship and mourn her untimely passing. In addition to her children she leaves one brother, Garnet SHEPHERD of Elgin, one sister, Mrs. Grover HALSEY of Tilden, and two grandchildren. After a brief service at Platteville, Wisconsin, the body was sent to Nebraska and funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Oakdale Thursday afternoon, May 18, with Rev. Allan MARTIN officiating. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery beside her husband, father, mother and sister.
