Obituary - The Oakdale Sentinel, Thursday, June 1, 1944

ARTHUR G. STEGE

Arthur G. STEGE, son of the late Jacob and Mary Ellen STEGE, was born November 26, 1880 in Martinburg, W. V., and died at a Norfolk hospital May 31,1944, at the age of sixty-three years, six months and five days. When he was four his parents moved to Stanton, Nebraska and in 1892 they moved to a farm west of Elgin. On February 18, 1907, he was united in marriage to Paula M. WILCOX. In 1011 he and his family moved to Oakdale where he was employed as a machinist helper by the C. & N. W. Railroad, and was transferred to Norfolk in 1921. Later his family moved to a farm west of Elgin where he joined them in 1942 when his health prevented his working. On Saturday, May 27, he suffered a stroke from which he did not recover. Surviving are: his wife, 2 sons, Harry STEGE at home and Gerald LeRoy STEGE, USN; 3 daughters Mrs. Fred HALEY and Mrs. Morris BEST of Elgin and Mrs. Earl McCLOUD of Clearwater brothers William STEGE of Norfolk, Harry D. STEGE, George STEGE and a sister Mrs. Annie BARLOW all of California; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Oakdale United Brethren church with Rev. H. G. Langley officiating. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

EDGAR G STEGE

Edgar G STEGE was born at Martinsburg, West Virginia November 16, 1878 and died at his home in Wheeler County, Nebraska on February 9, 1910. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Jacob STEGE and is survived by his parents, four brothers and his wife and little daughter, one year old. Funeral services were held Saturday at the United Brethren Church, the sermon being preached by Rev. CUNNINGHAM and interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery. The services at the grave were conducted by Oakdale Camp No. 3770, MWA of which fraternity the deceased was a member.

Jacob STEGE

Abridged: Jacob Stege was born at Syracuse, NY, November 1, 1833 and died at his home in Oakdale on Sunday afternoon, January 30, 1916. The sickness which caused his death was of one week’s duration. He was left fatherless at the age of 8 and he was taken into the home of a Mr Samson with whom he lived for ten years. Later he served an apprenticeship of four years and learned the trade of brush and bellows maker. At the opening of the civil war he enlisted in Co. A, 9th NY Cavalry and served during the conflict. In 1862 he was married to Miss Mary McDonald of Bunker Hill, VA and to them were born eight children, five of whom, with the mother survive. In 1878 he engaged in farming at McKeesport, Pallbearers. In 1884 he came to Nebraska, locating in Madison County. Five years later he removed to Stanton County and in 1893 he came to Antelope county settling on a farm west of Elgin. In 1911 he sold out his farm and removed to Oakdale. The children who survive are William and Harry of Oakdale, George of Neligh, Arthur of Atkinson, Mrs Chris Jacobs of Mason city, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the au B Church conducted by Rev J P Blakeley and interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. Member of Kilpatrick Post, GAR of which the deceased was a member, attended in a body.

Mrs Jacob STEGE, aged 82, died Wednesday (September 1, 1920) night at the nome of her son, Arthur STEGE. Funeral services will be held at the U. B. Church Sunday at 2 o’clock.

VERONA CELESTIA STEGE

Died on Sunday, March 30, 1909, at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs William STEGE, their daughter, Verona Celestia, aged five. Funeral services were held Monday in the United Brethren Church conducted by Rev. E. B. CUNNINGHAM.
