Obituary - The Oakdale Sentinel April 6, 1939
CURTIS H. STATTON
Curtis H. STATTON, 95, Civil War veteran, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Altha BAKER, in Neligh Friday morning April 1, 1939, following a short illness of four days duration. He suffered an attack of influenza a few weeks ago but had apparently recovered from it. Funeral services were conducted from the BARNUM funeral home and in the Oakdale United Brethren Church Monday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. Wm. A. SAUER. The American Legion and Auxiliary attended the body and conducted military rites. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. Mr. STATTON was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia, on December 3, 1843 and moved in 1852 to Jasper County, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. He enlisted in the Union army June 3, 1862. After service nearly three years in Company G, 63rd Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, he was discharged July 3, 1865. He marched with General Sherman "to the Sea." Mr. STATTON had a good memory and enjoyed telling his experiences in the war. He was married to Margaret J. ELMORE at Remington, Indiana, December 10, 1867. Five sons and daughters were born to them, one of whom survives. Mrs. STATTON died in 1922 at the age of seventy-one. Since that time he made his home with his daughter in Neligh with the exception of several months spent with his son, Charles STATTON, in Moline, Illinois until Charles’ death in 1929. Mr. STATTON came to Antelope County in 1884 and homesteaded five miles west of Oakdale. In 1899 he moved to Oakdale where he was employed in the lumberyard until 1908. The family then moved to Yates Center, Kansas, where they resided until 1918 when they returned to Oakdale. He joined the United Brethren Church early in life and was the last charter member of the United Brethren Church of Oakdale. He was faithful to his Church and his Lord until the end. He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed in the family circle. Surviving him are one daughter, Mrs. Altha Baker, ten grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

Margaret J (ELMORE) STATTON
Margaret J Elmore was born in Benton County, Indian, August 20, 1851 and after having been in poor health for several years, died Sunday, December 17, 1922. On December 10, 1867 she was united in marriage to C H Statton at the home of her parents in Jasper County, Indiana. She was the mother of five children, two of whom survive—Mrs A. E. Baker of Neligh and Charles C Statton of Moline, IL. She is also survived by her husband, ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren, four brothers and three sisters. The deceased came to Antelope County from Indiana in February 1884 and until 1899 resided on a farm in West Cedar Valley. In the latter year she removed with her husband to Oakdale and resided here until 1908 when they removed to Yates Center, Kansas. The lure of the old home was strong and four years ago they returned to Oakdale. Mrs Statton joined the United Brethren church at the age of fourteen years and remained a faithful member to the end of life. She highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the U B Church, conducted by Rev. A B Small. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.
