Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-December 6, 1918

HOWARD WAYNE SHURTS

HOWARD Wayne SHURTS, son of John W and Martha A SHURTS, was born February 24, 1893 on a farm twelve miles southeast of Oakdale and died December 3, 1918 from influenza. During the past eleven years he had resided with his mother in Oakdale. He is survived by his mother and three sisters, Nora EVANS of Birch Hills, Canada, Nannie TEMPER of Neligh, and Ada GILLSON of Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev J. P. BLAKELEY and interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

The remains of Grandpa SHURTS of Elgin, were buried beside his wife in the Oakdale Cemetery last week Friday. He succumbed to a paralytic stroke, November 26, 1894.

JOHN W SHURTS

Abridged: The sudden death of John SHURTS occurred last Sunday, May 3, 1903, at his home about four miles southwest of town. The funeral services were held at the house on Monday and burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery. He was about 53 years old.

MARTHA ANN WILSON SHURTS

Abridged: Martha Ann WILSON was born at Molene, Illinois August 14, 1853. She was united in wedlock to John W SHURTS June 7, 1873. To this union was born nine children, three died in infancy, one lived until eight years of age when she met death through an accident. The husband called out of life very suddenly, May 2, 1903. In the early siege of the flu plague, W. O. SHURTS and Howard SHURTS were victims, one passing beyond in October, the other in December of 1918. This leaves three daughters Annora EVANS of Saskatchewan, Canada, Ann TEMPER of Neligh and Ada May PEETS of Sioux City, Iowa. She met death Thursday evening July 9, 1925. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Abridged: Nettie SHURTS, age 8 years, died Monday morning, October 4, 1898. The funeral was held Monday, services being conducted at the Free Methodist Church.

WILLIAM OTIS SHURTS

William Otis SHURTS, son of John W and Martha A SHURTS was born May 22, 1881, at Sebetha, Kansas. With his parents and other members of the family he came to Antelope County twenty eight years ago and this place has since been his home. He was married to Ethel May HAYES on December 31, 1907 and to them were born three daughters, Nina, aged 10, Susie, aged 4 and Ruby, aged 16 months. Death came after only a week’s illness on Sunday, October 20, 1918. The deceased is survived by his wife and daughters, mother, three sisters and one brother. He was a faithful member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, an honorable citizen and a good neighbor. Burial was made Monday in the Oakdale Cemetery. The funeral services were in charge of the Odd Fellows.
