Della MORRIS

Della Cowin was born April 23, 1884, on the old farm three miles east of Oakdale. In her school days she attended the country school near her home. Her ambition was to help mankind by the nurse’s profession, so she entered the Nebraska Sanitarium, now Union College, to train for this work. She was married to William H. Morris of Oakdale on October 1, 1913. To this union two children were born Elwood Morris, who lives at Holdrege, Nebraska, and Mrs. Robert Nordling, who resides in Brandon, Minnesota. Elder George Smith baptized her into the Seventh Day Adventist Church in 1899. She has been a faithful and true witness for her Savior since that time. She was a great lover of God’s handiwork, especially flowers. She belonged to the Oakdale Garden Club and helped to beautify her city with flowers as well as a quiet and loving disposition. Her last illness was of short duration. She seemingly had the flu for several days. However, complications developed and she was advised by her physician to enter the Lutheran Hospital in Norfolk where surgery was found necessary. She died April 3, 1949, at 4:30 a.m. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband of Oakdale, her two children Elwood Morris, Holdrege, Nebraska, daughter Mildred now Mrs. Robert Nording, Brandon, MN. And grandson Billy, two brothers, Harry Cowin and Weaver Cowin of Oakdale, 1 sister, Mrs. Jennie Dill of Oakdale. There are also nieces, nephews, the wife and husband of her two children, a host of friends and brothers and sisters of the Church. L. O. Barnes of the Seventh Day Adventist Church conducted funeral services Tuesday afternoon, April 5, at the Methodist church here. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

George MORRIS

Abridged: George Morris was born at Glinton, England, December 4, 1849 and died after a lingering illness, at his home in Oakdale, Nebraska, March 3, 1917. His parents, John and Anna Fox Morris, came to America in 1851, settling on a farm near Tiffin, Ohio, where the mother died in 1887, the father following her to the better land in 1889. George came from Tiffin to West Point, NE, March 1871. Later he took up a homestead about four miles from Wisner. His first residence in Antelope County was a farm a short distance east of Oakdale, but after a few years he moved into town and has ever since made this place his home. On February 25, 1879, he was married to Miss Inga Alfson of Wisner, Nebraska. To this union three children were born, William H, Nellie and Mabel, all of who reside in Oakdale. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and three sisters, Mrs Lizzie Stever of Tiffin, Ohio, Mrs Mattie Stine of Berthold, North Dakota, and Mrs Jennie Beidelman of Cleveland, Ohio. The funeral was held at the home at 2 p.m. on March 5 and was largely attended. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Oakdale Cemetery.

INGA ALFSON MORRIS

Inga ALFSON was born in Horton, Norway, March 23, 1861. She came when a child to the United States and resided with her parents on a homestead four miles from Wisner. On February 25, 1879 she was married to George MORRIS and resided on a farm near Wisner. They moved to Oakdale about forty nine years ago. Her husband preceded her in death March 3, 1917. When a child she was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and in later life United with the Methodist Church of which she remained a faithful member till called to her eternal reward. Mrs MORRIS passed away at her home Wednesday noon on her birthday, March 23, 1932, after a lingering illness borne with great patience. She leaves to mourn her loss, two daughters, Nellie and Mabel, a son, William, and two grandchildren, Mildred and Elwood, all of Oakdale, and a brother, Alfred ALFSON of Wisner. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon and interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

LOVELL MORRIS

Lovell, five week old son of Mr and Mrs J. W. MORRIS, died Monday, February 20, 1911. Funeral services were held Wednesday and interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery.


Obituary-Neligh News and Leader-August 1976

NELLIE MORRIS

Funeral services for Miss Nellie MORRIS of Neligh were held Wednesday, August 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hoepfinger-Beyer Funeral Home in Neligh. The Rev. Harold J. COATES officiated at the service and burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery near Oakdale. Pallbearers were Ralph Kinnan, W. C. COWIN, Earl Henry MCNARE, Francis SONNENFELT, Alvin SCHWARTING and Raymond SPRINGER. Miss Nellie MORRIS was born on October 16, 1889 to Inga and George MORRIS at Oakdale and died Monday, Aug.16, 1976 at Neligh at the age of 92 years and 10 month. Miss MORRIS graduated from the Oakdale High School in 1900 and immediately started her teaching career in District 36 Star Country School. In 1904 and for several years following, she taught the seventh and eighth grades at 0akdale. A 2-year graduate of Wayne State Teachers College and the University of Nebraska she at began teaching business subjects at the Oakdale High School in 1930 and served in this capacity for 12 years. She also attended the Chicago Conservatory of Music and gave piano lessons to the youth of the Oakdale community for several years. She was hospitalized from 1942 to 1949 but resumed teaching in 1949 at Stuart. She held teaching positions in Polk and Colredge before retiring in 1958. In 1973 the family home in Oakdale was sold and Miss MORRIS moved to Neligh to live with her sister, Mabel BARTLEY. Survivors include a niece, Mildred NORDLING of Mankato, Minnesota.; nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. William H. MORRIS of Mankato, Minnesota.; a great nephew and wife: Mr. and Mrs: William H MORRIS of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and a great, great niece and nephew, Jessica and Troy. Preceding her in death were a sister, Mabel BARTLEY, and a brother, William H. MORRIS.

WILLIAM HENRY MORRIS

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 28 at Hoepfinger’s Home for Funerals for William H MORRIS of Oakdale with the Rev. Richard A KLINE officiating. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery with Ralph KINNAN, W C COWIN, Pat BRAGG, Ivan KINNAN, Earl MCNARE and Clem HENERY serving as pallbearers. William Henry MORRIS was born to George and Inga MORRIS December 23, 1879 in Wisner and died April 26 at Antelope Memorial Hospital at the age of 89 years. He was married to Ida Della COWIN on October 1, 1913 and to this union one son, William Elwood and one daughter, Mildred were born. Mr MORRIS spent most of his 89 years in the community Oakdale where in his adult years was known through his association with the Antelope County Bank and the First National Bank of Oakdale. He spent a number of his later years operating the Oakdale Hatchery and the Morris Hatchery in Neligh. He is survived by his son, William E MORRIS of Mankato, Minnesota, daughter, Mrs Robert NORDLING of Bryan City, North Dakota, one grandson, William H MORRIS II and two sisters, Miss Nellie MORRIS of Oakdale and Mrs Frank BARTLEY of Neligh. His wife, Della, preceded him in death on April 3, 1949.
