JOHN COWIN
It is with sadness that we chronicle the news that reached us on Thursday morning of the death of John Cowan (COWIN) at his farm about 3 miles northeast of town. Although he had been in ill health and a severe sufferer for some time past, his many acquaintances were hardly prepared for the news that he had hastened his end by hanging himself in his barn about 8 o’clock Thursday morning, May 30, 1895. No doubt his acute physical suffering, for which there seemed no relief, unbalanced his mind to such an extent that he finally committed the rash act while temporarily insane, he havinig evaded for only 10 minutes the watchfulness of his family who were aware that at times he contemplated ending his sufferings by suicide. He was man who was well thought of by all who knew him, was one of the early settlers, and we do think he had no enemy in the world. He leaves a wife and six children, who may rest assured that they have the deepest sympathy of all the people of this community; who will know that he could not have done the act if he had been well and of sound mind at the time and that he is therefore not responsible for what he did. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church at 3 o’clock. (Oakdale Cemetery)
