Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-September 17, 1931

CATHERINE WILMETTA STOLP CONWELL

Catherine Wilmetta STOLP was born a Frankford, Illinois, October 25, 1853 and passed away at Neligh, Nebraska September 9, 1931, at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 14 days. The deceased moved with her parents to Story City, Iowa in 1863. Lin 1871 she migrated in a covered wagon, pioneer style, with her parents to Nebraska and located on a homestead 3 miles east of Neligh. This piece of land is now known as the ROROBUAGH home. The deceased was married in 1872 to Alonzo H. SNIDER. Her husband died November 18, 1907 and she was married the second time September 30, 1909 to Dr W. F. CONWELL, practicing physician of Neligh. Dr. CONWELL preceded her in death November 9, 1921. No children were born to either marriage but an adopted son was taken into the home of her first husband. This adopted son, John, preceded his mother in death in the year 1910. Mrs CONWELL is survived by one sister, Mrs Ellen COURTRIGHT of Duncomb, Iowa. She also leaves to mourn her loss many nieces and nephews, one daughter-in-law, Mrs Marie ABBOTT, and one niece, Mrs Hazel DAVIS, to whom she gave a home from childhood. Before coming to Neligh Mrs CONWELL lived at Oakdale from 1872 to 1909. She saw many of the hardships of pioneer life in Antelope County. Her home was always open to friends, neighbors and even strangers. She was unselfish to a fault and gave home and shelter to many not of her own household. She was a member of the Methodist Church and maintained her Christian faith to the end. She was also a member of the Relief Corps and the Rebekah Lodge. Besides her relatives, she had a large circle of friends and neighbors who will greatly miss her presence. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Friday afternoon and interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Dr. W. F. CONWELL

After an illness of only a few days with heart affliction, Dr. W. F. CONWELL passed away at his home in Neligh Wednesday morning, November 9, 1921. He had not been well for some time and a spell of sickness a few months ago, from which he never entirely recovered, was but the beginning of the end. William Francis CONWELL was born in VanBuren, Grant County, Indiana, September 17, 1846. He was reared on a farm in Indiana and attended a district school near his home until he enlisted in the 118th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He served with this organization for eight months and then re-enlisted in the 17th Indiana Battery and served until the close of the Civil war. He participated in the memorable engagements of Cedar Creek and Winchester. At the close of the war he entered Roanoke Academy at Roanoke, Ind., and afterward attended the state normal at Terre Haute. He was a graduate of the Chicago Medical College and began practice of his profession in 1870. In 1875 he moved to Falls City, Nebraska, and four years later to Oakdale. In 1885 he entered the Bellevue Medical College in New York City, graduating the following year, after which he took a special course in surgery at the New York Polyclinical College. He then returned to Oakdale, where he resided until 1891, when he moved to Neligh, which has been his home since. He had been in continual practice of his profession in Antelope County for over forty years. He was at one time surgeon of the Northwestern railway company and was coroner of Antelope County three years. Dr. CONWELL was a charter member of Oakdale Lodge No. 113, I.O.O.F., and was one of the most active members in securing the erection of the lodge building in 1887. He was a member of the A. F. & A. M., G. A. R., M. W. A., and A. O. U. W. Funeral services were held at Neligh this afternoon and burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery, the Masonic fraternity having charge of the service.
