EFFIE CARMICHAEL

Graveside services for Effie CARMICHAEL, 100, Elgin will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Oakdale Cemetery with the Rev. Marlin MOHRMAN officiating. She died Tuesday, June 21, 1988, at Clover Lodge Nursing Home in St. Edward. She was born September 24, 1887 at Elgin, the daughter of Jiles Brooks and Ida (MILLER) CARMICHAEL. She grew up on her parent’s farm southeast of Elgin. She graduated from Elgin High School and Wayne State College. She taught school in Antelope County several years and later was employed at the bank in Elgin. For many years she was the deputy county clerk for Antelope County. She was a resident of the Clover Lodge Nursing Home the past several years. Survivors include two nieces, Mrs Etta Beth KNUDSON of Columbus and Mrs Donald (Ima Rose) BARRETT of White Water, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

GERTRUDE CARMICHAEL

This community was saddened by the sudden death last Thursday evening, November 21, 1935, of Mrs Oliver CARMICHAEL. Mrs CARMICHAEL in company with her husband and his father, Brooks CARMICHAEL, had started that afternoon for Iowa to attend the funeral of Mrs CARMICHAEL’s aunt. When they were near Wisner on making a sharp turn, their car left the road and overturned, killing Mrs CARMICHAEL instantly. The other occupants of the car were only slightly injured. The body was brought to Elgin that night and later to the home. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Elgin attended by an immense crowd. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. Of the immediate family there remains besides her husband, two sons and two daughters.

JILES BROOKS CARMICHAEL

Jiles Brooks CARMICHAEL was born in Noble County, Ohio, December 29, 1859, and died at his home near Elgin, Nebraska, July 21, 1940, at the age of eighty years, six months and twenty-two days. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the home with burial in the Oakdale cemetery. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Carroll County, Iowa. Here he grew to manhood’s estate having his part in the pioneer life of a new country living in log cabins, driving oxen and hunting and trapping with the Red Men. On December 25, 1879, /he was united in marriage to Ida Etta MILLER. To this union five children were born all of whom survive him. They are Oliver CARMICHAEL, Edna CARMICHAEL, Effie CARMICHAEL, John J. CARMICHAEL and Rose CARMICHAEL all of Elgin. He is also survived by his Wife, four grandchildren and two sisters. In 1886, in an effort to better himself and his family he moved to Antelope county where he has since made his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the home with burial in the Oakdale Cemetery.

ROSE CARMICHAEL

Services for Rose CARMICHAEL, 85 of St Edward, formerly of Elgin, were held Saturday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the Oakdale Cemetery with the Rev. Thomas A MACY of Columbus officiating. Pallbearers were Harold and Gerald MILLER, Laverne and Jerome STARMAN, William EISCHEID and Leonard BORER. Rose CARMICHAEL was born July 24, 1897 at Elgin and died on April 19, 1983 at the Columbus community hospital. She spent her entire life on the farm southeast of Elgin except for the years she spent in attending and teaching school, and the past two years when she and her sister had been residents of the Clover Lodge Nursing Home at St Edward. Miss CARMICHAEL attended rural schools and graduated from Elgin High School in 1915. She received her B. A. Degree from Wayne State Teachers College and attending the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She taught a number of years in the rural schools and the Spencer and Elgin High Schools. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Edna CARMICHAEL, two brothers, Oliver and John CARMICHAEL, and one nephew, Donald CARMICHAEL. Survivors include her sister, Effie CARMICHAEL of St Edward, two nieces, Mrs Donald (Ima Rose) BARRETT of White Water, Wisconsin, and Mrs Beth KNUDSON of Columbus, and one nephew, Clinton D CARMICHAEL of Spokane, Washington.
