ANNA SMITH - CAREY
After a lingering illness of nearly three years Mrs. Anna CAREY died February 8, 1920, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward O’KEEFE, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Funeral services were held on the 12th at the Raeville church and interment was made in the cemetery at that place beside the remains of her husband who died in December 1894. Anna SMITH was born in Montreal, Canada, June 8, 1836. Left an orphan as an early age she came to LaSalle County, Illinois, with friends. Here she grew to womanhood and in 1836 was united in marriage to Stephen CAREY. In 1877 she came with her husband, in a prairie schooner, to Nebraska and the following year settled on the homestead in Grant township which is still the CAREY farm. In the days we refer to as "the good old days" the CAREY home was one place where the latch string was always out. There was never a case of sickness or trouble in the community but what was relieved and made merrier by her quick wit and sunny laugh. The deceased is survived by two sons and four daughters - Thomas CAREY of Oakdale; Mrs. R.W. WILKINSON of Wing, N.D.; Stephen J. CAREY of Omaha; Mrs. J. S. YEAGER of Oakdale; Mrs. Edward O’KEEFE of Council Bluffs. There also survive twenty-three grandchildren four great grandchildren.
