Guy E. Butterfield, 1874-1945
Obituary-The Orchard News
Tuesday morning, death visited our village and took another of the pioneers of this territory in the passing of Guy BUTTERFIELD. His death was not unexpected as he had been hovering on the brink of eternity for several days. His passing released the soul from a body that has been steadily declining in health for several years and although we are always reluctant to bid our friends and relatives farewell from this life, a passing under these circumstances seem merciful for the one who has little in store but suffering and pain.
The deceased departed this life in Orchard on the 10th day of July 1945 at the age of 70 years, 11 months, 10 days. He was the second son of the late Edwin and Sara BUTTERFIELD. He was born on July 22, 1874, in Buchannan County, Iowa. He came with his parents to Nebraska in the spring of 1877 where he spent his entire life in the Venus and Walnut communities with exceptions of two years spent in Winner, South Dakota, and the remaining years in Orchard, Nebraska.
He was united in marriage to Rebecca ADAMS on October 22, 1898. To this union was born nine children three of which departed in infancy and the eldest daughter, Mrs. Andrew JACKSON of Middle Branch, Nebraska, departed this life two years ago.
He leaves to mourn his death the wife, three sons and two daughters, Harry of Orchard; Elden of Star, Nebraska; Melvin of Winner, South Dakota; Mrs. Everett BITTNER, Winner, South Dakota; and Mrs. Nels LUNQUIST of Star, Nebraska; and eighteen grandchildren; one brother, Frank E. of Orchard one sister, Mrs. Will COOK, Walnut, Nebraska; and also other relatives and a host of friends to mourn his departure.

Mrs. Frank E. (Harriet Ada) Butterfield, 1875-1942
Obituary-The Orchard News
Harriet Ada ADAMS was born in Johnson county, Iowa on October 26th, 1875, and departed this life after an illness of some duration at her home in Orchard, Nebraska, on April 7th, 1942, at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 12 days.
As a child she came with her parents to Knox county where the family settled on a homestead near Enterprise in 1881. There she continued to reside until the time of her marriage to Frank E. BUTTERFIELD on November 18, 1893. At this time the happy couple went to reside upon a farm near Walnut, which continued to be their home until they moved to Orchard in October 1939.
Mrs. BUTTERFIELD had been, previous to her marriage, one of the pioneer teachers of her community and her love for children made of her home life a rich and affectionate experience for she became the mother of nine children, seven daughters and two sons. But her mother heart found ample room for all children and young people of her community and when the family of Parker HILDRETH was left motherless, Mrs. BUTTERFIELD opened her home and included Ollie and Myrtle within her family circle. They shared with children in. the loving care and the loss to them is keenly felt.
Mrs. BUTTERFIELD is survived by her husband, Frank E.; daughters, Mrs. Fred SMITH, Creighton; Mrs. Fred SPAR of Orchard; Mrs. Wm. BERNER of Norfolk; Mrs. Walter PHILIPS of Venus; Mrs. Floyd HILDRETH, Mrs. Otto METTEIS and Mrs. Ernest BOELTER of Walnut, and sons, Edwin, of Orchard and Floyd, of Emmet. Also to mourn her passing are twenty-two grandchildren, four sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Ella BROOKHOUSER, Mrs. Anna SEXTON of Orchard; Mrs. Guy BUTTERFIELD of Middlebranch; Mrs. George WILCOX of Lincoln, John ADAMS of Cody, Judd of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Orra of Lockford, California and Perry of Venus, besides other relatives and a host of friends. They with the ones who have shared her loving ministering when needs or opportunity presented itself could testify to the affectionate disposition and willing sacrificial life of the departed.
Life is not measured by the years,
But by the deeds, the thoughts, the tears,
Shed for the needy, homeless, lost.
To serve whatever be the cost.
And so it was by such a one.
Her crown of life indeed, she won.
Funeral services were held from the U. B. Church on Thursday at 2:00 P. M. with Rev. WANTZ in charge. Appropriate music was rendered by mixed quartette composed of Mrs. WANTZ, Mrs. HALL, W. W. STROPE and E. C. HONG with Mrs. HOLBROOK pianist. Pallbearers were sons-in-laws. Burial was in the Enterprise cemetery.
