Obit- Lydia PEASLEY BARTON -
Lydia Peasley Barton was born April 21, 1854 in Potter county, New York, and died at her home in Royal, Nebraska, October 29, 1939 at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 8 days. At the age of eleven years she moved with her parents to Michigan and there two years later she married Silas R. Barton, a veteran of the Civil War. Sometime after their marriage, the young couple decided to locate in Kansas and establish a home, but when they reached Missouri, they heard of the grasshopper scourge in Kansas so came to Nebraska instead. Their first choice of a location was the Yellowbanks near Norfolk where they remained for a time, and then came to Antelope county and took a homestead three miles east and three north of the present town of Royal. During the 85 years of her life, Mrs. Barton saw many changes. Born during the time when Franklin Pierce was president, she lived through the administration of nineteen other presidents. During her lifetime three wars were fought, she saw the treeless virgin prairie transformed into luxuriant fields and marked with broad and shining highways. She who came to Nebraska in a prairie schooner lived to ride in comfort in a motor car. A woman of industry, frugality and vision she labored unceasingly for the upbuilding of her home and the best interests of her family. Surviving are five children, the eldest son, Henry, having preceded her in death. The children are: William, Brunswick; Alfred, Bloomfield; Carrie Hill, Orchard; Leonard and Edmund, Royal; George, Oakdale. There are also 27 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren, making 69 living descendants. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Royal conducted by Rev. Wantz of the U. B. Church at Orchard. Interment was in the cemetery at Royal by the side of her husband who died a number of years ago. (newspaper containing obituary not available)
