WILLIAM ATKINSON, 1844-1923
The Oakdale Sentinel-October 5, 1923
William ATKINSON was born in Lee County, Illinois, April 8, 1844, and died at his home in Oakdale, Nebraska, September, 28, 1923, being aged 79 years, 5 months and 20 days. He grew to manhood in the County of his birth and it was there he married Mrs Rebecca LEE in the spring of 1885. To this union was born one child, a son, Levi E ATKINSON, of Oakdale. The Atkinsons left Illinois in 1886 and came to Antelope County, Nebraska settling on a farm northeast of Oakdale. Here they lived until about six years ago, when the toll of years made it necessary for them to give up the strenuous labor of farm life. For three years they lived with their son in Holt and Rock counties, finally coming back to Oakdale to spend the remainder of their days. "Uncle Billie", as he was known to the residents of Oakdale, was cheerful and despite the advancing years was always alert and keen of wit. He passed the time of day with whomever he met as he went between his home and town several times a day. During the past few weeks he has been missed. Of him it can be said, "There was but one Uncle Billie".
