Dewey Leo Childs was born February 5, 1922 at Tilden, Nebraska.  He enlisted in the Navy on November 25, 1942 and received his training at Great Lakes, Illinois and Norfolk, Virginia.  He served as a gunners mate aboard the USS Wyman, a destroyer escort, which participated in battles at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.  He was separated from the Navy on November 6, 1945.
