James H. Bauman was born in Neligh on April 5, 1926 and enlisted in the U S Marine Corps in June 1943.  He trained at San Diego and Camp Pendleton, California.  He was sent to the South Pacific in November 1943 to participate in the final stages of the Bougainville campaign and landings on Guam and Iwo Jima with the 3rd Marine Division.  He returned to the U S in January 1946 and reenlisted to make a career of the Corps, serving in the Korean War and in Lebanon.  He retired in 1964 and makes his home in Neligh.
