Samuel Vernon, father of Harvey Allen Vernon, was born September 28, 1839.  Harvey’s mother was Mary Crane.  They lived in Sloan County, Iowa when Harvey was born on July 31, 1875.  They lived across the Missouri River from the Winnebago Indian Reservation.  Samuel’s father, Noah Vernon, was born in North Carolina on May 3, 1805.  Noah married Sarah Lewellhyn who had come to America from Wales.  Harvey’s parents moved from Iowa to a farm located west of Elgin.  Harvey’s oldest sister, Stella, married Joe Bishop of Valentine, Nebraska.  Joe and Stella had several children.  Harvey’s youngest brother, Lee, attended Wayne State College and received his B. S. Degree from Northwestern University and his Master’s Degree from Columbia University.  He served with the Ambulance Corps in France during World War I.  After the war, he married Jennie Pateet.  Lee taught history in a Chicago High School for many years.  Roger, the oldest brother, was the principal of a Chicago high school.  Ronnie is a college professor.  Rosalee married and lives in Illinois.  Eva taught school for two years.  She contracted diphtheria and died at the age of 19.  Harvey settled on a farm in the Clay Ridge community.  He married Mae Ham, the daughter of a Baptist minister.  They had 12 daughters.  They all became school teachers.  Harvey purchased his farm west of Elgin in the early 1900’s.  Harvey and Mae moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1936.
