Edward H. Trowbridge’s grandmother, Amelia Hartman, was
born in Saxony (German) and lived at Burlington, Wisconsin and Clinton, Iowa,
and as a widow homesteaded near Neligh, Nebraska in 1878. Her daughter, Loretta, was born in
Wisconsin in 1843 and married Henry Trowbridge who was born in Litchfield
County, Connecticut in 1829. Their
first five children were born in Wisconsin and the last two at Neligh. Edward was born in 1864 in Wisconsin and
married Nancy Atkins, born in Sterling, Illinois to Albert and Phebe
Atkins. Albert was a Civil War
Veteran. Phebe’s father, Gile Smith,
came with them to homestead near Elgin but he tragically died from an
infected thorn in his hand. Edward
and Nancy moved from Neligh to Elgin in 1904. Flossie, Albert E and Forrest were born there. Ed operated a dray service between Elgin
and Oakdale. Later he managed the
Edwards and Bradford Lumber Yard. His
sister, Emily Trowbridge (Mrs Ralph Woodworth) was the first teacher of
District#18. Flossie Trowbridge
married Guy Johnson of Elgin and their children were Zongar and Shirley. The family later lived at Columbus,
Lincoln and Fremont. They moved to a
farm near St. Edward in 1936 and in 1948 they bought a farm southeast of Elgin
and farmed until retirement. Zongar
Johnson was a Marine in World War II. He and his wife Lorraine farmed near St Edward for 20 years and then
moved to California. Shirley taught
school at Beatrice, Nebraska and married Donald Genrich. Albert Trowbridge, Ed’s son, married
Ernestine Lindberg of Elgin. They
lived in Columbus, Nebraska. Forrest
Trowbridge married Bessie Wylie of Elgin. They live in David City.
