CHARLES
H. TORPIN was born in Coe County, Illinois in 1864 and in 1888 was united in
marriage to Effie May Hollister in Port Byron, Illinois. After a few years farming in Illinois and
Iowa, they moved to Fremont, Nebraska and operated a store. In 1891, his father, Henry Torpin,
purchased a grain elevator in Oakdale, Nebraska. Charles became the manager. He and Henry owned a number of elevators along the Chicago and
Northwestern Railroad. The Torpins
had four sons, Richard Ivan, Keith, Ralph, and Paul and twin daughters,
Maurine and Mildred. Maurine died at
the age of 13. Effie died in 1914. In 1915, Charles married Mary Brainard and
they had a son, Donald Lincoln Torpin (1917-1980). In 1924, the family moved to California where Charles died in
1950. Mary died in 1959.
