JAMES
ROBERT SUTHERLAND was born at Mountain City, Tennessee, on August 22, 1872,
to Preston Sutherland and Margaret Harris. The family moved to Virginia in the 1880s. James and his two sisters, Sarah and Celia, came to Nebraska
after their mother’s death in 1891 and settled near Kennard, Nebraska. He met and married Mary Butts at Fremont
on September 10, 1901. She was the
daughter of William Butts and Charity Miller. William was a Circuit Rider Minister. James farmed for several years in the Arlington, Kennard and
Leigh areas and later northeast of Stanton. Mary died there in 1914. James
moved to the Tilden area in 1919 and farmed in Antelope County. He retired from farming in 1938 and moved
into Tilden where he died in 1945. James and Mary were parents of seven children: Gwendolyn, married Dewey Ray, he died in
1959; Theodore, never married, died
June 1970; William married Gladys Morgan, he died in 1979 in Washington, four
children; Violet married Everett Beed,
he died 1984, four children; Winnona
married Myrle Priestly, he died 1959, no children; Ruth married John
Stephenson, no children.
