August Schultz was born in Sweden in 1858. He followed his brother, Karl, to America in 1881. He took a homestead northwest of Elgin. Mary Stark was born in 1862 and came to America from Sweden in 1882. She homesteaded west of Elgin. Mary and August were married in 1886. They lived on August’s homestead until 1900 when they moved to a farm just north of Elgin. In 1928, they moved into Elgin where Mary died in 1942 and August in 1951.
They had three children: Arthur, born in 1890; Amanda, born in 1893; and O. Edwin, born in 1898. Arthur married Loretta Totten in 1916. They farmed the original homestead and were parents of three children: Wesley, Alice Marie, and Gwendolyne. Loretta died in 1941 and Arthur married Hope Milligan in 1945. Arthur moved into Elgin in 1960 and died in 1974. Amanda graduated from the University of Nebraska and taught school for over 30 years. She married Guy Johnson. Amanda died in 1980. Edwin farmed north of Elgin. He married Merle Farris in 1928. He served as a state senator.
