August Kerkman, son of Frederick Kerkman and Cecelia Kuhl, was born December 6, 1914 on a farm east of Elgin. His siblings were: William, Ted, Tony, Joseph, Frederick, Catherine, Sister Gertrude, Theresa and Elizabeth. When August was two the family moved to a farm southeast of Elgin. He attended St Boniface and helped his father farm. He went to Minnesota to work in the harvest fields during the drought years.
Helen, daughter of Joseph J. Meis and Marie Klink, was born January 7,
1916 on a farm southwest of Elgin. She graduated from Elgin High in 1933. She and August were married on January 26, 1943. They lived on the family farm until
retirement in 1978 when they moved into Elgin. Their children: LeRoy married Linda Weiland; Lavonne married
Charles R Miller; Leland married
Karla Tobias; and Leon married Annette Kallhoff.
