James Madison Grove was born in Wells County, Indiana, January 27, 1856, son of
Lewis and Annie Grove and died April 11, 1958. James was fourteen when his father died. He helped his mother with to raise six
brothers and sisters, all of whom died young. Annie died when James was sixteen. On December 29, 1874 James married Mary Alice Galyean in Wells
County. They spent 12 years in
Indiana and then they decided to move west to Antelope County, Nebraska in
1888. The couple, with son, Philo
Ulysses (1876) and daughter, Edith Leone (1878) homesteaded west of
Orchard. After a year, they moved
northeast of Orchard. Due to family
deaths in Indiana, they returned there in 1894 and worked in lumber mills and
oil fields. In 1896, they returned to
the family homestead. Mary Alice Galyean
was born April 16, 1854 in Wells County, Indiana, daughter of Harlan and
Edith Ellis Galyean. She died in
Orchard on April 14, 1913.
