Joe George came to Nebraska before the turn of the century
with his younger brother, Ed, from Lebanon. They had left their home country because of religious beliefs. Abraham George, an older brother, had come
to America some years earlier and purchased a store in Venus, Nebraska. Joe and Ed were in their early teens and
started out peddling goods by foot, later they had a wagon and horses. Abraham died suddenly, so the two teens
took over the store. In 1910 they
built a store in Orchard and had a thriving general merchandise
business. Joe lived with many farm
families before settling in Orchard. Joe purchased several farms in Antelope, Knox and Holt counties. Joe married Jennie Saloum in 1917. Their children were: Marvin, Marvelane, Joe Jr, Mary Louise,
and Jeannine. Joe Jr served in World
War II; Marvelane was an Army Nurse, and Mary, a Cadet Nurse. Joe passed away in November 1955.
