George Gatenby was born in Yorkshire, England, March 16,
1834. He was married to Mary Suddaby
in 1865. They lived in Yorkshire and
then moved to Beverly, England, residing there from 1868 until 1880. They had five children: George H, Fred S, Sam P, Hilda and
Harriet. With his wife and children
and his sister, Polly, they left England on December 23, 1880, arriving in
the U S January 12, 1881, and on to Neligh in March 1881 where they took
homestead in New England Valley. Polly returned to England. Besides being a farmer, Mr. Gatenby was a Methodist preacher. He died in 1906 and was buried in Fort
Calhoun, north of Omaha. Mrs. Gatenby
went to Lincoln to live with her son, Sam, and died there.
