Floyd E. Gatenby, son of Fred S. and Ida McCormick Gatenby,
was born on July 20, 1893 at Neligh. As a youngster he lived on a farm in “Hackberry Hollow”. He married Mary Louise Retke on November
16, 1912 in Orchard. Her parents were
Carl and Caroline Retke. The Gatenbys
farmed southeast of Orchard until 1930 when they moved to Neligh where Floyd
worked at the Neligh Produce Company. Five sons were born: Harold,
Fred, Clifford Carl, Lyle Lavern, Glenn Dean and Gordon Eugene. Harold, Clifford and Lyle graduated from
Neligh High and Glenn from Gallatin, Missouri. In 1939, they moved to Lamoni, Iowa and later to Gallatin where
they lived at the time of their deaths. Gordon Eugene died at the age of 13. Clifford died in Omaha, July 8, 1972. Floyd died August 3, 1949; Mary died June 27, 1952 in Gallatin.
