Verlon Harrison Douglas Furstenau was the second child born to Paul and Nell Clocker Furstenau on June 9, 1924 on a farm northwest of Neligh. He attended rural school in the Black Lake District through the eighth grade, then Willowdale for two years, and finished at Neligh High in1941. He was inducted into the US Army in 1945 and discharged in 1946. He spent World War II in Texas, Washington and Manila. In 1947 he started farming east of Neligh.
He married
Nadene Peterson in 1950. Marcia
Nadene Peterson was born to Romaine and Helen Carpenter Peterson on October
19, 1931 near Neligh and attended rural school and graduated from Neligh High
in 1949. She attended Wayne State and
taught kindergarten in the rural schools. Three children were born to them: Galen Dean married Debra Pollock; Verlene Gae married Lynn Yates; and Lelia
Jan who died the same she was born. Verlon had three brothers; Junior, Bud and Uen, and two sisters,
Evangeline and Nona Joan. Nadene’s
family are: Joyce, Lois Jean, Richard
LaVern, Kenneth Norman, and Keith Lee.
