In the early 1890's, James Clingman, an experienced cowboy, drove a herd of horses from Nebraska to Grass River, Manitoba, Canada. He remained in Manitoba for nine years where he was a renowned horseman and athlete. He was goal keeper and a pitcher. It was here that he met and courted Violet Louise McDougall, daughter of a Scotsman, William Ross McDougall and an Englishwoman, Elizabeth Carr.
They were married in Oakale in 1903. James was a skilled carpenter, house painter and market gardener. Their first two boys, Ross and Leslie died in their first year. In 1913, the Clingmans, with their sons, Roy, born October 13, 1908 and Lloyd born December 23, 1910, moved to their homestead. Three children were born on the homestead, Viola Lucille on October 3, 1915; Harold on February 6, 1919 and James Kenneth on October 14, 1922. Roy married June V. Borchers on June 12, 1928 and Lloyd married Clara Stephenson on June 23, 1937. Lucille died in 1921; Harold in 1937. James married Bessie Godby Spurgin on September 20, 1947. James Clingman died in 1957 and Louise at Torrington, Wyoming in 1972.
