Edwin Ellsworth Butterfield was born October 16, 1908 at Walnut, Nebraska, the son of Frank E. and Harriet Adams Butterfield. Edwin lived in the Walnut area where he farmed for several years.

He was married to Genevieve Knapp, daughter of Roy and Mae Brewster Knapp on March 1, 1930. She died in March of 1945. On November 21, 1946, he married M. Audette Bruce, daughter of Dr. Ernest and Rozella Lee Bruce.

In 1938 he moved to Orchard and owned and operated the Orchard Implement Company until it was destroyed by fire in 1962. His career was interrupted only by being called to the service of his country during World War II. During his absence the company was managed by Earl Smith.

In 1963, he built a drive-in cafe on the same site as the burned out company building. Ed was a member of the American Legion and Orchard Village Board. He and Audette are the parents of three children: Janis Elsie, married to Dennis Richards; Joanne Joan, married to Richard Marcellus, and Larry Eugene, married Joy Kuehn.
