Robert Browning was born January 30, 1845 at Lexonshire, Scotland, the son of Gavin Browning and Jane Ray. He came to Ontario, Canada with his parents when he was 17. In 1868 he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and on September 17, 1869 he married Anna Mitchell of Scotch Grove, Iowa. She was born December 22, 1846 in McCaviay, Styrlingshire, Scotland, the daughter of Alex Mitchell and Ann Wilson who came to Iowa in 1866.
In 1880 the Brownings came to Nebraska, settling near Ewing, where they farmed until 1907 when they moved to Orchard. Both Robert and Anna died in Orchard, Robert on October 14, 1922 and Anna on December 29, 1927. There were nine children: three died in infancy, John, Alex, Robert, Guy, Jean and Anna.
