Luther Bennett was born in LaFayette County, Wisconsin on November 12, 1858 to Mr and Mrs John Henry Bennett. Luther came to Antelope County in 1871 with his parents and sister, Luella. His brother, John Andrew, had died in Wisconsin in 1861. Two other children were born in Antelope County, Loren and Anna.
Luther married Sophia Karls on October 30, 1881 and they farmed
in Wheeler county for several years before moving to Elgin where they
operated Bennett’s Butter and Egg Store. They were parents of 10 children: Ollie, Charles, John, William, Grace, Bertha, Zetta, Aleda, Clifford
and Ruby. Luther was elected sheriff
of Antelope County in 1911 and served until 1922. In 1923 the family moved to Swisshome, Oregon where he worked
for Southern Pacific Railroad until he retired. Luther died on May 17, 1936 and Sophia died on September 20,
1944.
