Lulu Margaret Totten was born at Bridgewater, South Dakota, where she lived until she was 14 years old. In 1902, she moved with her father, brother Bill, step-mother and baby step-sister Mary to a farm northwest of Brunswick in Antelope County.
At that time George Harrison Barton, with his family, lived nearby. George was the youngest of six boys. He had a younger sister.
The Barton place was the site of many social activities to include baseball games and barn dances. Since they lived in the same area, George and Lulu became acquainted and later married.
