John C. Backhuus and family came to the United States in about 1875. They first settled near Omaha. The family consisted of the parents and children: John, Casper, Christina, Mary and Emma. All but Emma had been born in Germany.
About 1885, the family moved
to a homestead northeast of Neligh. Mrs Backhuus had died a few years before, so John had to be both mother
and father. John Jr died of pneumonia
when was 17. John C. Backhuus died in
about 1897. Casper and Christina
remained on the homestead until 1912 and then moved to Iowa and each brought
back a spouse. Casper and his wife
moved into Neligh. Christina had
married Harry Krebs and then lived near the old homestead until 1945 when
Harry died. Mary married Paul Lier
and moved to Mitchell, South Dakota. Emma
married Oscar Truax. (See Truax)
