She celebrated the day with a large cake and nearly 50 guests at her small home in Hazen. How has she lived so long and in such good health? Her children say it was because “she was needed so often” and Lydia, too, talks of traveling to live with her grown children to help them through unexpected misfortunes. The mother of six children, she has lived in Hazen since 1945. She moved from Krem, a small community that once existed about 10 miles north of Hazen. She and her husband moved to Krem from their homestead in Golden Valley in about 1915 and her husband died in 1955. She lives alone, although a neighbor or relative will assist her occasionally with cooking and cleaning. Before her eyesight began to deteriorate, she kept busy crocheting and quilting. In the summer months, she can still be seen out behind her house “making a garden” and says she intends to do it again this year. Her health, while not perfect, seems to be satisfactory for a woman of her age. When asked how she’s done so well, she says, “The good Lord kept me that way.” ~Source: Unknown North Dakota publication, dated January 1983 ~News article and photograph submitted by family researcher, Jacquelin Knecht August Ziemann ~~~~~ Lydia Knecht Ziemann
