Arthur Miller & Clasta Foss

Arthur and Clasta Miller were in farming in the Hazen area until 1964. Art was born in 1912 to Sam and Marie (Schuh) Miller, farmers north of Hazen. His wife, Clasta (Foss) Miller was born in 1916 to Clarence and Bella (Nelson) Foss on their farm south of Hazen.

Arthur served in the Marines for three and one-half years during World War II. Clasta taught school in Hazen and nearby country schools for 12 years.

Arthur was also a carpenter and built their farm home with the assistance and encouragement from Clasta. After Art’s death in 1964, Clasta had the house moved into Hazen. The moved caused a small stir as power lines were lifted and cut along the route, and local authorities detoured traffic as the house moved along the streets.

Clasta worked as a clerk in Bentley’s V Store in Hazen for some time. She was also active in supporting the organizations her children were involved in. She was an avid basketball fan and seldom missed a home game whether it was the varsity squad or Pee Wee tournaments. She died in 1972.

Children born to Art and Clasta were Doyle, born in 1951 and died in 1965; Corliss (Chapman) born in 1953 in Hazen.

“No matter where I call home now, Hazen and North Dakota will always be special to me, and the place I can always call home,” writes Corliss.
