John Maas & Katharina KruckenbergJohn and Katharina Maas were both born in Russia; John in 1871 and Katharina in 1878. John’s parents were Martin and Louisa Maas. John came to America at about 21 years of age and lived with his brother, William, near Tripp, S.D., before moving 12 miles north of Hazen where he lived and farmed for the rest of his life. After John had built his sod house, he married Katharina Kruckenberg, daughter of Gottlieb and Dorothea Kruckenberg who had moved to Expansion. Katharina died of cancer at age 30, leaving John with five small children. He later married Maria Reich, who had two small daughters, Martha and Maria (who died in 1932.)
