Michael Zeiszler & Helena Sailer Zeiszler

Michael Zeiszler was one of the pioneer businessmen in Mannhaven, Expansion and Hazen.

He was the son of Christian and Rosina (Guenthner) Zeiszler, who for political and economic reasons left Russia for the United States in 1886, to homestead north of Hazen the following year.

Michael’s first wife was Helena Bohrer, daughter of Johnnes and Katharina (Schamber) Bohrer. They had three children:  Adam, Ida (Mrs. Henry Reichenberg), and Hertha (Mrs. Ed Parsons.)

After the death of his first wife, Michael married Helena Sailer, daughter of Peter and Margaretha (Morast) Sailer, in 1913. They had four children: Bertha (Mrs. Lee Merritt), Ernest, Viola (Mrs. Chris Sontum) and Walter.

Mike, as he was known, operated the New Store in Mannhaven with his partners, Adam and John Sailer. Later he established his own store in Expansion and also served as Expansion’s postmaster until the family moved to Hazen in 1916, operating a store there.

With the exception of a two-year sojourn in California, from 1923 to 1925, all the children attended Hazen schools. Their school year was extended to 10 months with the month of June each year devoted to German school presided over by Carl Semmler.

Mike again operated a store in Hazen and served on the village board. During this time all the children helped in the store.

Son Ernest, a retired Army officer, now lived in Stockton, Calif. [1988] with his wife, the former Fern Bieloh of Hazen. Ernest writes:

“The greatest achievement of the Mike Zeiszler clan while living in the multi-gabled house across from the Missouri Lutheran Church, was being able to assist in the founding and establishing Hazen as a working community and feeling proud that after 76 years it is bigger and better than ever.”
