Wilhelm & Christina Richter

Wilhelm Richter was born in 1853 in Bessarbia, and his wife, Christina, was born in the same area in 1859.  They homesteaded north of Krem in 1886 after staying for a time in Yankton, S.D., where Christina had a sister.

Outstanding family achievement was the building of a stone barn which is 110 feet long and 40 feet wide.  The walls are 15 feet high.  The family worked on it for years. Tons and tons of rock are in the building. The walls are still there and in quite good condition [1988].

They spoke German, but Wilhelm spoke Russian, too.  He built a store close to the farm which he ran for some time.  Later it was sold to a Minneapolis man, and the family went back to farming.

Wilhelm and Christina had five children, who were born in the Krem area.
