ELDOR AND GERTRUDE ZIEMANN

Eldor Ziemann was born Sept. 15, 1914, in rural Hazen to Emanual and Martha (Rahn) Ziemann.

Gertrude, daughter of David and Rosalia (Guenthner) Isaak, was born January 27, 1920, in Mannhaven.

They were both raised on a farm and have farmed all their lives. Things were very different in the earlier years. Lots of chores had to be done by hand. A lot of work was done with horses. Even after they were married November 19, 1939, they used horses to put in their crops for several years before they were able to buy a tractor. They milked cows when they were children, and milked cows until all their boys were through high school (1973.)

The mailman had to go by sled or buggy to deliver the mail. He delivered, even in blizzards.

The Hazen business area was much smaller with smaller stores. There weren’t as many packaged items as there are now. Groceries were shipped by train and hauled by horse and wagon to the stores. Families didn’t go to town very often. Stores were open on Saturday nights and a lot of people did their shopping that night. The children could go to a show.

Cattle were driven by horses to the railroad corrals and shipped by train to the St. Paul stockyards.

Family outings included going to rural area baseball games, Fourth of July in Krem, and attending weddings.

Eldor and Gertrude have five children: Dale, 1940; Jack, 1943; Richard, 1947; Franklin, 1949; and Wilbert, 1954.

They attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Hazen, where Eldor attended as a child. Dale and Jack taught Sunday School and attended Luther League in Stanton. Gertrude is active in the American Lutheran Church Women and has held almost every office. She taught Sunday School for 15 years. Eldor and Gertrude are members of Stanton Senior Citizens where Gertrude was secretary for two years.

Eldor’s father died July 10, 1958; his mother July 20, 1947. Gertrude’s father died April 26, 1960; her mother July 16, 1977.
