Fredrick & Christina Adolf, Sr.


Christine (Kuch-Schimke) Adolf was born in Bessarabia, South Russia in 1864 to George and Elizabeth (Bohnmiller) Kuch. She married John Schimke, and after two children were born, the emigrated to America. They settled on a homestead where three or more children were born. John Schimke died and left her on the prairie with five small children. After her husband’s death, she married Fred Adolf, who was born in 1868 in South Russia and came to America with his parents, Daniel and Katherine (Zink) Adolf. They family settled in Mercer County, but because they didn’t like the climate, they left for Oregon after three months. Since Fred didn’t like to cut down trees, he came back to North Dakota and dug rocks.

Christine and Fred were married in 1893. Christine already had land and a home and some cattle, so they lived on her farm. Together they had eight boys and one girl. They farmed 12 miles north of Hazen until they retired. They were married 60 years before Christina died.

Children: Two children were born in South Russia: John Schmike and Ernestine (Brietling) Schmike. The other 11 were born in Expansion: Emma Schmike Richter, Paul Ernest Schmike, Reinhold Adolf, Daniel Adolf, Fredrick Adolf, Henry Adolf, Anna Adolf Ehni, Karl Adolf, Arthur Adolf, Martin Adolf, Gust Adolf.
