I'm looking for information about HAMILTON, William Henry, who appears in Eddy County, New Rockford Twp., ND 1900 Census. Also any information on ABBOT, Ella, age 45, living in residence with William as an employee. I know that she later became his wife. Also in residence is ABBOT, Clinton, employee, age 12; ABBOT, Emma E., age 7; and ABBOT, Mary E., age 4. The family had lways assumed that William Hamilton was the father of Emma (Emeline) and Mary until researching the 1900 census. The existence of a boy (Clinton) was also a surprise. It is possible that William had lived near Maza in Towner County, ND, and that the Abbots came from Devils Lake, Ramsey County, ND before appearing in Eddy County. Any information you might find should prove useful. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I am looking for any information on my greatgrandparents, Richard BAKER and Margaret Christine KERN Baker. Margaret was born 1866 in Missouri, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Kern (info taken from her death certificate) and Richard was born in Rockford, Illinois. We were told that they were married in New Rockford, North Dakota. Last week my aunt found a picture of Margaret that was taken at a studio in New Rockford, so we now know that they were living there at one time. They were living in Illinois again by the time my grandfather, James Arley, was born (1886). Richard abandoned the family about 16 years later and was never heard from again. By the early 1900's James was living in North Dakota with cousins (we have not been able to indentify the family). Any help on these surnames would be appreciated. Sara Newman [email protected]

I am trying to find out all I can about Charles Kearney. He came from Ireland. He was married to Rose Lunski (from Minto, N. Dak.) and they lived in the New Rockford area for a while. He worked as a laborer for the railroad. His first child, James Kearney, was born in New Rockford, in 1914. Shortly after that the family moved to Grafton, N. Dak. Around 1918, Charles Kearney disapeared and his family never heard from him again. I have been searching land records, social security records and census records and cannot find a record of him. Is he mentioned any anything you have come across? Any suggestions where else I can look? Thank you, Sherlyn Meiers

I am looking for a Ruth PENTICO who was living with her half-brother's family in New Rockford, Eddy County, ND in the 1920 Census. This family was the Charles OWENS family. Charles was listed at age 26, a merchant's helper, with a wife, Elizabeth and children Marie, Robert, Violet, Lester and then the half-sister, Ruth PENTICO living with them, age 10. Ruth is the daughter of Jacob PENTICO from Dallas County, IA. Jacob died in 1909, the wife and mother of Jacob was Amanda MINICK PENTICO. She supposedly married the father of Charles OWENS and they all moved to ND sometime after Feb. 1910. A 1940 history of the PENTICO family states that Ruth PENTICO was married and died at the age of 22 years somewhere in ND. A brother, Russell PENTICO supposedly passed away at the age of two years in ND. There may be brothers Alvin and Elmer PENTICO as well. I do not know what happened to Amanda MINICK PENTICO except she may have married a Mr. Brill/Brail/ Brayle?? Can anyone find who Ruth PENTICO married, when she died, where she lived and anything of the Charles OWENS family? Thanks. Helen Whannel

According to my mother's birth certificate, there were five other children born to Esther, but I have no information about them.

This is not so much a query as it is an announcement that I have published a story about several early 1900's Eddy County, ND families on my web site at url: http://www.ginetworks.com/~johns2rt/phoebe.html It is more or less a series of letters containing genealogical & historical information on several early families in the Sheyenne area (ASPER, CARTFORD, KENNEDY, SOPER, etc.). If you are researching these families, and find they are yours, please drop me a line & tell me how you fit in. Jack Stewart Grand Island, NE http://www.ginetworks.com/~johns2rt

Jon M. Newton Mon 13 Mar 2000

I am looking for any and all descendants or ancestors of Henrietta K. Newton, a Walsh county pioneer who was born December 19, 1853 in Kongsberg, Norway. She came to New Richland, Waseca County, Minnesota with her parents when she was 16 years old, around 1869-1870. In 1875 she married Andrew Newton, son of Bjorgulf Knudson Næsland (April 14, 1820-April 27, 1897 Polk County, Minnesota) and Anne Aanonsdatter Brattland (February 04, 1822-June 27, 1908, following husband's death Smiley Township, Red Lake County, Minnesota) both born in Norway. According to the Wednesday, March 22, 1944 issue of "Grafton News and Times" Henrietta died Thursday morning, March 16, 1944 and was buried in the Grafton Lutheran Church Cemetery Monday, March 20, 1944. In this same issue, under Local News on page 4 is the following entry, which this query centers on: "Mr. and Mrs B. V. Hanson and son Vernhard of Sheyenne, N. D. arrived here Friday and visited over the week end till Monday at the Erick Lee home. They came to attend the funeral of the late Mrs. H. K. Newton, who is Mrs. Hanson's grandmother." Also on page 4 is a card of thanks from Henrietta's children: Mr. and Mrs. Erick Lee, of Grafton Township Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Johnson, of Sheyenne, N. D. Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Newton, of Hollingquist, Sask. Here is what is known of the children. Henrietta had twin sons in 1876 hamed Henry and Ben. The birth would have taken place in New Richland, Waseca County, Minnesota given the family homesteaded in western Walsh County in 1885. Since no mention is made Henry in the "surviving children" portion of her obituary, it may be assumed Henry died prior to his mother. Ben's wife's name is unknown. I can't even find Hollingquist, Sask on either maps or the Canadian Geographic Name Server. Any ideas where this is/was? Othilia was born in 1878-79, she was 1 yuear old on the 1880 Census in New Richland. Her name may be mispelled. Annie was born in 1880, she was 1/2 year old on the 1880 Census. Both girl married. It is not known which married Lee and which married Johnson. One of the daughters also had a daughter that married B. V. Hanson and had a son named Vernhard. Since both Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. B. V. Hanson are from Sheyenne, it might be logical to assume a relation, possibly mother and daughter. If the girls were married in their 20's that would be around the turn of the century. The 1900 or 1910 Census should show the young couples and possible any children. Any help would be very much appreciated. Jon M. Newton Seattle, WA

Nicholas S. Hagen, M.D. Sun 28 May 2000

I am trying to locate any descendants of Ole O. Hagen and his wife Ingeborg who lived in Sheyenne Township, Eddy County. I recently discovered that he is a brother of my great grandmother, Ambjor O. Hagen, and I did not know that he had emigrated from Norway. Ole O. Hagen died in 1901 at Sheyenne. According to the 1900 Census their children were Inger (born June 1888), Ida B. (born Aug 1889), Olauf T. (born June 1891), Bernt C. (born Apr 1893) , Carel O. (born May 1896) and Klara (born June 1898). I have traced his ancestors back over 400 years so would like to correspond with any of his descendants. Nicholas S. Hagen, M.D. 2251 North 32nd Street, No. 20 Mesa, Arizona 85213 [email protected]

Wesley Brown Wed 6 Jul 2000

Five BROWN siblings got land patents near Devils Lake in the late 1800's and early 1900's, Annie, Phillip, Michael, John, and Daniel. John and Michael settled in Eddy County, Phillip(my father) and Daniel settled in Benson County, and Annie Brown Clifford settled in Nelson County near Lakota. Only Phillip and John stayed through the 20's and 30's while the rest went elsewhere, perhaps Saskatchewan. I'm trying to find information on Annie, Michael, and Daniel as I think I know what happened to Phillip's and John's descendents. Michael and Daniel married Hilda and Esther Johnson from near Sheyenne while my father, who wanted to marry a third sister, was not successful and married my mother the local Twin Tree schoolteacher instead. Yes, I swam at the Bouret dam. Many thanks. Wes Brown

I am looking for any information about Winfield Smith Rawlings - we have a Eddy County BLM certificate from 1889 and that data is also in the BLM Data base. Winfield purchased land in 1889, but by 1891 he was living in Bellingham Washington. We have confirmations and are very curious as to what we might discover of the reasons. Of particular interest: Any information relating to, possibly his marriage to: Julia Delphina Wheeler. The certifcate also says it was registered at "Devil's Lake" and we're interested in possible connections to the Indian Reservation of the same name. ie - some history on it. Also, when the land was sold and to who: just under 160 acres Meridian 05, 149N, 66W Section 31. Would also be interested in William M. Rawlings, possibly a cousin, who purchased apparently adjacent land at the same time.

Seeking information that will aid in locating where Ralph West lived near Sheyenne in Eddy County from 1912 - 1915. Lee West states " Our parents were married in March 1912 in Grand Rapids, MN and immediately moved to North Dakota to a farm in Eddy County. They moved back to Grand Rapids approximately two years later, in time for me to be born in Grand Rapids in April, 1915. Finally, we don't know about the ownership of the land they farmed...quite possible that whether it was a purchase, rental, or homestead , that it could be recorded in the name of either our father, Ralph L.West, or his father, Willis M. West I wonder about tax records." In that Ralph West was injured shortly before his return to MN when a horse he was riding fell on him; my question was there a newspaper serving the Sheyenne area and if so where are copies archived ? Would there be other records for the area thatxwould help? Lee is my brother-in-laws father. Thanks for any response. Ken Shimota, Fargo ND E-mail:[email protected]

We do not know if the Cross family was in Eddy County - But are looking for George Clayton Cross, born likely in 1900 - give or take a few months either way. He subsequently moved to North Carolina and married a High Point woman named Madge Seward, who bore a child for them November 3, 1944. He was shipped overseas with the Army and she died two years later. Their child was adopted and renamed Richard David Wilcox, although he was named at birth for his natural father. At the time of George, Jr.'s birth, Mr. Cross was 44. There are no Sewards left with whom to talk, and the militarycannot research this with the scant information we have - or will not. Thank you. Marlis Wilcox I can accept mail at: 2605 Uwharrie Road, High Point, N. C. 27263 or can accept collect phone calls between 9 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. weekdays @ 336 674 7623 for one week, only. Oh - Mr. Cross's parentage likely included a native American grandparent Thank you this may be a Father's Day surprise! Marlis

I believe that she may have died in 1900 or 1901 during child birth as Hiram had a daughter born in that time frame and his sister Anna Greeley adopted the girl. The daughter’s name was Gladys May King she was born 12 Sep 1900 and died 21 Oct 1964. Both families were intact in the 1900 census, but in the 1910 census Hiram’s wife is not there and Anna’s husband is not there, but they are living in the same household. I would be interested in any information you might be able to give me. Thank you Darwin Kampman [email protected]

Ralph West Wed 26 Jun 2002

Ralph L. West, married in March 1912 in Grand Rapids, MN and immediately moved to North Dakota to a farm in the Sheyenne vicinity in Eddy County. The farm where the family took up residence was referred to as the Old Thompson Farm. My question: anyone know of a farm in SE Gates Twp referred to as the Old Thompson farm? - According to the 1910 Plat Book there were three Thompson farms in SE Gates Township; E.B. Thompson in Sec 35 -320 acres ,80 acres in Sec 34, 240 acres in Sec 36 and 80 acres in Sec 26; A.M. Thompson SW 1/4 of Sec 25 and and E1/2 of SE Qtr Sec 26 and Annie E Thompson 160 acres Sec 26. Emploring for my nephew great grandson of Ralph West. Thanks Kit Shimota E-mail [email protected]

Tom McCabe Tur 27 Jun 2002

June 25, 2002 I am looking for information on Francis McCabe and Margaret Martin who immigrated to Eddy Co (Tiffany, near New Rockford?) in 1883. Family lore is that Margaret is buried on the old homestead but Francis is buried in Larimore with the family of one of his sons, Michael McCabe. I do not know the year of Francis' or Margaret's death - that is something I would like to find out. Francis and Margaret came originally from Monaghan Ire to Opps, Ontario Canada in 1861 before moving on to Eddy. Francis and Margaret had a son named Francis Jr who, I believe, remained on the old farm with his wife Mary most of their lives. Francis Jr. was born abt 1851 in Ireland but I do not know when he died in Eddy Co. Francis Jr. had a son Francis T. McCabe who lived in Eddy Co and died abt 1995. I am looking for obits on any of these people, except for Francis T, which i found in the newspaper archives in Grand Forks. Is there an archive of obits from newspapers between 1883 and 1895? tom mccabe san marcos tx [email protected]

We are researching Joseph and Mary LaPierre (Lepeir) family. In Ancestry.com census images for 1880, we cannot find Eddy County listed. Was Eddy County part of another county at that time, or called something else? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Janet Cosgrove Yamhill, Oregon

I am trying to find a needle in a haystack. I am in search of a man with the nickname ERNIE last name LIGHTNER or LETTNER , spelling may be different. He lived in Eddy County in or around New Rockford in the 1920's. I assume he was in his 20's around 1928. He dated Blanche Bonderud in 1928. She was from Carrington, Foster County. Any confirmation or information would be grateful. Reply to [email protected] Sincerely, Scott Linde

Rebecca Halvorson Fri 8 Nov 2002

My name is Rebecca Halverson. I am researching my family and have had many road blocks. I am very new to this and do not know how to obtain information (what sites to visit, who to write, etc.). My direct family only seems to have very limited information. They have never written any family history down much less to my knowledge thought about it as much as I have in the last few years. I guess you can say I'm on a quest. How far I get depends on people such as yourself. I live in Beaverton Oregon which is very far from North Dakota as you could imagine. I don't have the resources (or do not know how to obtain them) at my fingertips. The information following is all of what I know in regards to my ancestors; Halvor Halverson was born in Norway in September of 1866. Halvor moved to the United States in 1886. He settled in Eddy County in the Greenfield Township of North Dakota. Halvor married a woman by the name of Martha O. (possible last name initial). Martha was born in Norway as well, she was born in July of 1873. At the time of the 12th census of the U.S. they had two children. The first born was named Peder K. Halverson in July of 1898 in North Dakota. Martha and Halvor's second born child was Bernhart Ole Halverson (in later years he only went by his middle name) he was born in April of 1890. Halvor Halverson owned a farm and also lived with his brother Peder P. (for Persmoen, Halvor and Peder's surname in Norway). Halvor's sister in laws name was Nilla Forde. Peder was born in January 1875 in Norway. Peter's wife Nilla was born in March of 1880. They also had a farm laborer living with them his name was Theadorr Karattaugh born in 1869 also from Norway. If you know where I could get information on any of these people I have mentioned above please respond. Thank you kindly, Rebecca Halverson [email protected]

Thank you in advance for any information you may provide to me. My great grand parents were John Wenz and Louise Freck Wenz who were both from Germany and settled in New Rockford around the late 1880's to 1890's. I have been told that they had a working farm and owned a mercantile type store in town. They had 11 children. Out of the 11, I have been told the following names George, Charles, Lawerence, Fred,John, Catherine, Bertha, May and my grandmother Emma Wenz MacLean. My grandmother was married in New Rockford to George Arthur MacLean who was originally from New Brunswick Canada. Emma and Arthur had 5 children all born at home in New Rockford, their names were/are Leroy John b. 1915, Chester b. 1915 (Leroy and Chester were identical twins), James Dean b. 4/21/1920 , Donald 10/2/1922 and Mary Louise b. 8/24/1929. The family of Emma and Arthur moved East in 1934. I am told at one time my grandfather was employed at the water treatment plant in town. From what my mother has told me their home was outside town. My grandmother lived into her late 90's and I have been told that a few of her siblings did also. I have also been told that one of her brother moved to Minnesota but I am not sure which one others moved off to larger towns in ND. Any information you may be able to provide is truly appreciated. I have been very successful tracing my Canadian roots but little success with the Wenz's.
