Creation of Eddy County
1885 Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Dakota
Eddy County was named for Ezra Booth Eddy by the 16th Dakota Territorial Legislative Assembly on 28 February 1885 to be official on 9 March 1885.
The county was to be created from the north half of Foster County and the county seat to be New Rockford subject to voter approval from both sections.
On 15 April 1885, the governor Gilbert A. Pierce, convened a commission to organize the county. It consisted of Paul J. Braman, F. J. Dunham, and John Prader and on 27 April 1885 an election of the Foster County was held to approve the formation of the new Eddy County and a revision of Foster County.
The commission established the first county government by naming as Sheriff: W. H. Flint; States Attorney: F. V. Maney; Clerk of Court: Joseph Cleary; Superintendent of Schools: J. W. Hays; and County Clerk: Chauncey Canfield.
The county is 644 square miles (of which 14 square miles is water) and a peak population of 6,493 was reached in 1920. The 2000 population was 2,757.
