The Historical Society of Maries County is a non-profit corporation founded in 1956 to collect and preserve information pertaining to historic events of Maries County:  to assume responsibility for proper recognition and preservation of various historical landmarks, relics, souvenirs, and Missouriana, and to engender a rightful pride in the history of Maries County and the State of Missouri.

Through its publications, special programs and exhibits, the Society perpetuates the history and traditions of Maries County.

The Research Room in the Maries County courthouse in Vienna contains the Society's holding of old county records, member-contributed family charts and records, published genealogies and other research materials.  Open Wednesdays, 1-4 p.m.

Members of the Society also maintain three museums in Vienna:  the Old Jail Museum and the Felker and Latham Log Houses, all built in the 1850's.

The Maries Countian

A news-quarterly mailed to members of the organization; features articles from a myriad of sources.  This illustrated publication contains material of value to those interested in local history as well as the researcher of genealogical data on Maries County families.  Its pages bring a wealth of information from past newspapers, birth, marriage and death records, and transcriptions from various collections and compilations of known facts and reminiscences.  Material is gleaned from old ledgers, documents and registers to guide the reader through Maries County's past.  Included are items and stories of general interest and communications from members in all areas of the country.

  • A County/Family  History of Maries County, MO, Volume II, 1990 - Hardbound, 504 pages.  900 family histories are surname indexed.  Also stories about the churches, businesses, schools and organizations of Maries County.  $47.00 plus $5.00 to mail. (Sold out and currently out of print)
     

  • A County Pictorial/Family History of Maries County, Volume III, 1995 - Hardbound, companion book to Volumes I and II.  520 pages highlighting the lives and times of the people and places of Maries County, past and present.  "A Tour Through the Townships" pictorial section featuring the schools, churches, and communities through hundreds of photographs.  Wedding, Anniversary and Military sections.  The 553 family histories are surname indexed.  $47.00 plus $5.00 to mail.
     

  • 1955 Vienna Centennial book containing Maries County chapter of Goodspeed's 1889 History of Various Missouri Counties, including biographical sketches.  $5.00 postpaid.
