Waldo County was created in 1827 from portions of Hancock, Lincoln, Kennebec, and Penobscot Counties. It was named in honor of General Samuel Waldo, who was proprietor of the Waldo Patent. In 1838, Waldo County gained Vinalhaven Island from Hancock County. In 1860, Waldo County lost a southern portion to the creation of Knox County.
Belfast is the County Seat.
