COUNTY FORMATION

Somerset County was formed in March, 1809, from northern portions of Kennebec County, which were previously a part of Lincoln County, and before that a part of York County. It was named after Somerset County in England. From 1811 through 1850, Somerset County's boundaries often changed, losing, gaining, or exchanging portions of land with its neighbors. In 1842, Somerset's boundary between Canada was firmly established by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty.

Norridgewock was the first County Seat. Since 1871, Skowhegan is the County Seat.
