Sagadahoc County was established in 1854. Located in the midcoastal region of Maine, it was initially part of York and, later, Lincoln County.
The name Sagadahoc is said to have come from the Sasanoa Indian Tribe and roughly translated means "mouth of big river," referring to the Kennebec River. Sagadahoc County was most likely named for the Sagadahoc expedition of the early 1600s, which included the Popham Colony at the point of what is now Phippsburg.
In 1891, Sagadahoc County lost small southwestern piece to Cumberland County.
Bath is the County Seat. It is world famous for its shipbuilding. It is home to Maine's largest employer, Bath Iron Works, Inc. and to Bowdoin College. The Brunswick Naval Air Station is a close neighbor.
