COUNTY FORMATION

Knox County was officially formed in April, 1860. Its territory came from parts of Waldo and Lincoln counties. Knox County was named in honor of Revolutionary War General Henry Knox, who lived in the county from 1795 until his death in 1806. In 1913, Knox County gained Isle au Haut from Hancock County.

Rockland is the County Seat.

Knox County is the very heart of the central Maine coast. It boasts 14 lighthouses and many islands as well as many navigable harbors.
