Cumberland County was founded in 1760 from a portion of York County, Province of
Massachusetts Bay, when the large county of York was divided into the three
counties, York, Cumberland and Lincoln. Cumberland County was named in honor of
William, Duke of Cumberland, a son of King George II.
Cumberland County
stretched north to south between York and Lincoln counties. In 1763, it was
expanded further north. In 1786, a small portion was acquired from York County.
In 1805, much of the northern and central portion went to form Oxford County. In
1847 a tiny bit of Oxford was returned. In 1854, a northern portion was lost
when Androscoggin County was formed.
Most of Casco Bay and most of its
islands east of East Cundy Point belong to the county's territory, as does the
northernmost part of Saco Bay.
Portland is the County Seat.
