Washington County was officially established September 6, 1776. The area came
from the northwestern section of Frederick County, which separated from Prince
George's County in 1748. In 1789, Washington County lost its western portion to
the formation of Allegany County.
On Washington County's northern
boundary is the Mason and Dixon line, which separates Fulton and Franklin Counties,
Pennsylvania, from Washington County. To its east lies Frederick County, Maryland.
To its west lies Allegany County, Maryland, which is separated by Sideling Hill Creek.
Washington County's southern border is the Potomac River, which divides
Washington County from and Loudoun County, Virginia, and Morgan, Berkeley,
and Jefferson Counties of West Virginia.
Hagerstown is the county seat.
